METSS Develops Novel On-site Decontamination Technology for Ebola

METSS completed a Phase II SBIR project for the EPA to develop a safe, robust, rapid, and effective chlorine dioxide (ClO2) gas dispersion system to be used for on-site room decontamination in hospital and non-hospital settings.  This technology will meet the demands of the health care market to decontaminate porous materials and sensitive equipment in rooms or vehicles used for patient care or transport. The ability to decontaminate a room containing porous materials and sensitive equipment on-site and in a non-destructive manner would be invaluable to the health care industry and meet a critical need for low-cost, simple solutions to decontaminate non-medical spaces as well. METSS demonstrated the feasibility of a novel ClO2 gas dispersion system to achieve >6 log inactivation levels of virus and bacterial spores at full scale.  (EPA 68HERC-20-C-0005)

Compact Sensor for Non-Destructive Propellant Mechanical Property Evaluation

Many rocket motors are powered by solid rocket propellants comprised of energetic substances, stabilizers, catalysts, plasticizers, etc., bound in a polymeric matrix. Over time and, depending on the environmental conditions experienced by the motor (temperature, humidity, etc.), the elastomeric material matrix degrade and becomes prone to cracking, delamination, and other modes of failure that can be triggered by typical means of transport, storage/stowage, and operational events. There is a need to inspect solid rocket propellants quickly and efficiently for signs of mechanical degradation before these modes of failures occur. METSS is addressing this challenging using a novel ultrasonic sensor and neural networks models which have demonstrated a strong correlation between sensor response and mechanical properties of aged materials. (Navy N68335-23-C-0122)

Collapsible and Protective Portable Canine Shelter

Military Working Dogs (MWDs) are a critical part of modern defense strategy, yet there are very few pieces of protective equipment designed specifically for dogs. In a chemical/biological (CB) threat environment. There is a need for transportable MWD shelters that provide the same level of protection as warfighter PPE, including filtered air supply and other features to ensure the health and safety of the animal. The goal of this project is to create a portable CB-protective shelter for MWDs that can be carried by one person, deployed in the same timeframe required for a human warfighter to don CB PPE, and meet a panel of other specifications that ensure the MWD’s health and safety. (Army W911NF-23-P-0010)

Critical Supply Chain Production of Energic Materials and Associated Precursors

Disruptions to supply chains due to COVID-19 has been severe and, for many businesses, has highlighted the fragility of their supply chains. Disruptions to manufacturers, materials suppliers, and transportation have taken a major toll on production operations worldwide. These issues have been compounded by significant changes in the labor due to changes in work habits due to COVID and/or an aging labor pool.  The DoD has been dealing with these same issues, as well as number of other factors that have slowly eroded the defense industrial supply base over the past decades. To this end, the objective of this efforts is to fill critical defense acquisition needs related to the supply and production of energetic metal nitrate materials based on domestic materials and manufacturing capability. (DLA SP4701-22-P-0054)

Advanced Lightweight Composite Structures for Ground Vehicle Systems

Military trailers serve in a critical support capacity by transporting equipment and supplies from rear storage and staging areas to their point of use in the field. The decking on current trailer systems is made of East-Asian Apitong, a natural hardwood produced from foreign sources that is becoming increasingly scarce. The reduction in supply has caused a corresponding increase in price, which adds to the life-cycle cost of the trailers. The Army is seeking alternative decking materials to serve as a direct replacement to Apitong. METSS is addressing this need by combining advanced polymer compositions and physical designs with processing methods developed to manufacture plastic lumber using conventional, high-throughput, melt-extrusion processes. (Army W56HZV-23-9-F001, Sub)

Non-PFAS Elastomeric Chemical Barrier Materials

Chemical, Biological, Radioactive, and Nuclear (CBRN) protective items are typically comprised of an elastomeric element to impart barrier properties, while allowing a range of movement and flexibility to the person wearing the wearing them.  The elastomers used in protective equipment are typically fluoropolymer-based materials to provide against chemical warfare agents (CWAs) and toxic industrial chemicals. Fluoropolymers are in a class of chemicals called per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), which the governmental is trying to eliminate due to environmental and health concerns. METSS is addressing this need by developing novel, non-PFAS elastomeric barrier materials that provide protection against liquid and vapor chemical threats while maintaining flexibility and durability. The new materials will be compatible with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1994 Class 1 standard. (Army W911QY-23-P-0038)

Improved Towed Array Acoustic Hose

The objective of this project is to develop improved acoustic hoses for the U.S. Navy TB-34A, TB-37A, and TB-29C towed array systems. Acoustic hoses are manufactured using an extrusion process using thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs) with a variety of reinforcement cords. Current hoses exhibit unreliable life cycle as they are vulnerable to creep, water saturated Isopar, and physical damage (i.e., cuts and abrasion). Improved acoustic hoses need to demonstrate superior physical properties, as well as exceptional mechanical properties to maintain the U.S. Navy’s submarine and combatant ship state-of-readiness. METSS is developing new materials that are more resistant to cuts, abrasion, and wear, and maintain mechanical performance after prolonged exposures to seawater and Isopar. (Navy N68335-22-C-0633)

Critical Supply Chain Production of Loop Clamps

The DLA would like to broaden the base manufacturers that are qualified sources of NSN: 5340-01-504-4221 Clamp, Loop. Increasing the supply base will improve product availability, provide competition to reduce lead times and cost, and motivate suppliers to address lifecycle performance issues.  These loop clamps provide vibration dampening support and restraint for cables, conduit, pipes, hoses, tubes, and pneumatic and hydraulic lines. As METSS addresses this specific need, METSS is also developing and improved loop clamp cushion material that will increase service life and reduce O&M costs. The new material will qualify under MIL-DTL-85052B/1C, which will make it applicable to a much larger population of defense critical parts. (DLA SP4701-22-P-0091)
